Eviction Court

The eviction moratorium is no longer in effect, but help is still available for rent and utilities.

If an eviction case is filed against you, the case a matter of public record. If you get a court summons, the hearing date, time, and location will be on the documents. You can decide whether you want to attend the hearing.

If you go to the hearing:

  • Arrive early. Give yourself plenty of time to arrive, find and pay for parking, go through security, and find the courtroom.
  • Check in with the judge's staff in the assigned courtroom.
  • Look for signs for mediators or Legal Aid attorneys who may be at the courthouse to provide help. Ask the court staff if Legal Aid or other assistance agencies are routinely at the courthouse.

You need to know, if you go to court:

  • Money Judgment may be entered against you for rent you owe plus the landlord's court costs and attorney fees.
  • Eviction Order may be entered against you telling the county sheriff to lock you out of the home.
  • You may have the chance to negotiate with the landlord, apply for rental assistance, agree upon a move out date, etc.

You need to know, if you do NOT go to court:

  • Money Judgment for rent you owe, plus the landlord's court costs and attorney fees, may NOT be entered against you if you are not present in person.
  • Eviction Order may be entered against you telling the county sheriff to lock you out of the home.
  • You will not have the chance to negotiate with the landlord. You should plan to be ready to move out of the home within a few days.
